Grandma

My Grandma passed away last week. I am so sad about it, but grateful I got to celebrate her life with my family and say goodbye. She was such a wonderful Grandma and a great lady. She was at every occasion that mattered to me from cello concerts, community plays, all of my graduations, and much more. She was a Great-Grandmother to my kids too, and Colby lovingly called her Kalawaia. She was always generous with her time and service and she always made me feel special. I spent countless hours with her up at the University of Utah. She would take me to work with her and give me a map so I could explore the campus museums and whatever else I wanted. We'd always meet back at her office and go to lunch at the Panorama Room--it was awesome. She got me my first job there too when I was fourteen, working at the games with my mom and sisters. Whenever I went on a school trip for orchestra (9 times), she always slipped me some cash so I could be a little more extravagant with my souvenirs or whatever I needed. She did the same thing every once in awhile when I was in culinary school because she knew I was absolutely broke. I appreciated her support so much. She was always mindful of my needs.

I'm grateful for all the trips she went on with us to Disneyland and all of the movies we saw together. She was a great cook and she was pretty funny. One of our favorite things about Grandma though was her love of music. She had a beautiful voice and every time something reminded her of a tune, she would burst into song. Everything was a song...from "California Here I Come," to lullabies and hymns. I loved it. My grandpa put together the absolute best tribute to her that included so many talented voices. Her funeral was amazing, and even though I cried a lot, I could see her on the stand singing with each person that performed in her honor. I know she loved it.

After we got back from the cemetery, the Hawaiian Civic Club of Salt Lake threw a Luau for all of Grandma's family and friends. It was very touching and fun. Again, I could just picture my sweet Grandma mingling in the crowd enjoying an eclair from Carol's Bakery.

I know death is just a transition, and I am ever grateful for the knowledge that I will be with her again someday. It's just hard not to be lonely for someone who was such a tremendous influence in your life. I miss her already. I'm glad she didn't have to suffer longer in her failing mortal body, and that she can be in a better place. I miss her already though. I love you Grandma. Thanks for all of the wonderful memories.

Here's Grandma singing to me before the ceremony--a memory I cherish and am so happy that I have a picture of.
